February 2, 1994 New Brighton Pazk Boazd Minutes 2 c. Little Lakes Little League Dave Bernlohr of Little Lakes Little League (CELL) presented a proposal to the Pazk Boazd. The four yeaz proposal included improvements to some of the park ball fields. Bernlohr noted that LLLL serves New Brighton, Mounds View, Arden Hills, Shoreview, North Oaks and Vadnais Heights. The LLLL program follows the National Little League program. They meet once or twice a month. There are about 2,000 games played every summer. About 150 kids are from New Brighton. New Brighton has the third largest number of participants. New Brighton makes up 11 % of participants and we get 12 °lo of our fields from New Brighton. In 1993 $10 of the registration fee was set aside for field development. Want to work with the cities on developing more fields and/or improving the fields. Have about $1,550 in New Brighton to spend. One of LLLL goals is to have all the kids in New Brighton play the majority of their games in New Brighton. All cities have asked for a multiple year plan. Last year very few 11-12 yeaz olds played in New Brighton because of lack of fields for that age group. Totem Pole, Sunnyside, and Pike Lake have been chosen as the fields to make improvements to. They give a geographic balance and age appropriate balance. Each proposal to the city includes a cost share program. It gets done more quickly that way. This year would like to target Totem Pole. LLLL would like to fund a dug out-like area on the lst and 3rd base lines. This would give kids a feeling of being in the big league. This would include a 6 foot fence with two openings. and a 4 foot fence with one opening in the back. The City would provide 2 benches; move one to 3rd base line and put a hood on the back stop. LLLL would provide protective fencing in front of the bench at Sunnyside and Pike Lake. Cost is $1,400. LLLL. would ask the City to excavate the infield and bring in top soil and put grass down. Trevorrow asked if other baseball leagues use these fields. Bernlohr said yes. MVAA and Park and Rec use these fields. Anderson said we use a lot of fields for our programs. We would continue to use Totem Pole. We cannot turn over a field for exclusive use to one organization. Anderson mentioned to Bernlohr that the other two fields being considered; Sunnyside and Pike Lake, would need School District approval for improvements since they are school facilities. Bernlohr said he has gotten approval for improvements from John Osttund.
