February 18, 1993
HANSEN PARK SECURITY MEETING
The New Brighton Pazk Board met with approximately 30 Hansen Park area residents, at its
February 3rd meeting to discuss park security issues. The meeting was held in response to a
citizens survey taken by the City in November 1992 in which residents expressed feelings
that they were becoming more concerned with their personal safety even though they had
experienced few problems in their neighborhood. The Park Board and Park and Recreation
Department staff decided to take apro-active position .and deal with potential problems
before they occur.
Specific concerns that were raised included:
* Children are concerned about drugs in the pazk, although no specific instances
could be cited.
* Lighting needs to be increased in parking lots.
* Speed needs to be controlled on adjacent streets.
* .Additional police visibility in the park is needed.
* Frisbee golf area needs more supervision.
* Satellite vandalism needs to be controlled.
* Loose. dogs and dog droppings are a problem.
Non-security issues included:
* Benches on the pathway would be nice.
* Tennis courts should be lighted.
* An exterior pay phone would be appreciated.
* A resident asked if it was possible to facilitate a "block walk" for residents.
* Satellite needed by Frisbee Golf area.
* Posting the distance of paths would be appreciated.
* Need more matting on path leading to pleasure rink.
The Park and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Police Department will be
formulating a plan to deal with as many of the issues raised as possible. Area residents who
have additional concerns or solutions are encouraged to call the Park and Recreation
Department at 633-8906.
