r
parking lot). (Limiting traffic and parking in residential areas is
often a concern for municipal government, such as in the limitations
placed on home-based businesses; the situation in Driftwood Park is
similar.)
The last issue is the volleyball court. Mr. Anderson showed a
proposal to move it from its current location behind the shelter
building to a location very close to Fifth Street. We are vehemently
opposed to this proposal. While I was at the Park Board meeting .last
night my wife, Deborah, was hosting a writing club meeting in our
living room, which is across from the park entrance. With the
windows open the volleyballers provided frequent interruptions to my
wife's meeting with normal cheering and yelling that occurs in
volleyball games. When I returned home well after dark, the
volleyballers were still playing under the lights. The noise from
the volleyball court sometimes gets worse when people play loud
music.
We are not delighted with either the location or long hours of the
current volleyball court, but we can live with them, partly because
at least some of the din is deflected by the shelter building.
However, moving the volleyball court would move the noise right
across from our living room and backyard: very few peaple would
welcome a regular, loud, brightly lit, late evening volleyball game
in their neighbor's backyard. Moreover, we are very concerned that
having a volleyball court directly across the street will affect the
value of our property. This is totally unacceptable. We do
appreciate the fact that at the meeting Mr. Anderson and the Park
Board discussed options for keeping the volleyball court at its
current location, and reasonable options were developed during that
discussion.
Driftwood Park benefits many residents of New Brighton, and will
benefit many more in the new subdivisions being constructed south of
the park. Aesthetics are obviously a concern of the Parks Department
and the Park Board because there was substantial discussion at the
meeting last night about the best way to landscape the new southern
entrance to the park from Wexford Heights. Meanwhile, the noise,
traffic, and the less attractive elements of the park are
concentrated on its north side. For example, our view is of a
building and a chain link fence. While we are reasonable people and
realize that a recreational area will have a certain amount of
activity, we do not feel that we should bear the brunt of the
negative aspects of this park.
We strongly encourage you to seek the measures previously discussed
to mitigate parking problems and adamantly request that you leave the
volleyball court where it is.
Thank you for your consideration.
~-- s.~
