The percentage of the total that were toddlers was 10.8%. This
percent closely resembles the percent of adults which was 8.5%. The
reason for this similarity is that the adults had constant supervision
over the toddlers. Many of the adults would assist the toddlers in
play, for example, pushing them on a swing or sitting them on their
lap while sliding down the slide. The percentage of the total that were
preschoolers/kindergarten was 18.8. The percentages for grades
one-three and four-six were almost identical, 27.7% and 27.8%
respectively. Junior high and senior high represented 8.5% of the
population observed on the playground. (Graph A)
It was observed that the jungle-gym was used twice as much
as the swings, which was the next popular piece of equipment. The
totals for the merry-go-round and slide were much the same. A
possible explanation for this similarity is that most of the children on
the merry-go-round used the slide as a means of traveling from the
upper terrace to the lower terrace.
The teeter-totter was the least popular piece of equipment of
the five pieces observed. The children that were observed on the
teeter-totter spent a minimum amount of time on it. (Graph B)
Grades four-six dominated the use of the jungle-gym. In
contrast the other four pieces observed were dominated by grades
one-three . The sparatic movement of the younger children may be
due to a .shorter attention span than the older children. The older
children tended to stay on one piece of equipment for a longer period.
of time, due to a longer attention span. (Graph C)
5
