. ...

. '

-3-

some control aver the remaining wetlands in New Brighton. We urge you

to go ahead with that plan. Much of the local wetlands have already

disappeared; the issue will be moot if control is not instituted in

the very near future.

The League is also interested in the public education aspect of

the report.

Over-fertilization of yards and gardens, debris allowed

to wash away and a lack of erasion control can significantly damage

the quality of Lang Lake water. 11any residents are probably unaware

of the harm that can be done. A public education program could'do

much to reduce the nutrients and sediment that washes into the storm

sewers and ultimately into Long Lake.

Members of the Council, a great deal of money has been spent in

the Rice Creek watershed to improve the water in Long Lake, and costly

corrective measures continue to be taken. As the prime beneficiaries

of Long Lake's recreational opportunities, it behooves the residents

of New Brighton to do everything possible to assure that the lake
remains an asset to our community.

The League of Women Voters of New Brighton recommends the

adoption of the stormwater plan. However, we urge you to also adopt a

wetlands ordinance to control development of areas of the city which

still serve to allow storm water to be cleansed and to replenish the

ground water.

We also encourage you to undertake a public education

program designed to make residents of this area aware of the impact

their habits can have on the quality of Long Lake if care is not

taken.

Members of the CDunc ii, the League is pleilsed that you are

taking steps now to be sure that stormwater is adequately handled and

in an environmentally sound manner.

No one wants their basements
