I

I

I

- J -

But just imagine what would happen to our city officials. They
come up for election every two years and they would bear the
brunt of the voters wrath.
-Lets consider that block where seven tags could have been issued.
Do you think any of the incumbents would be able to place a yard
sign at any of the twenty homes in that block if that had happened?
Just assume that there are at least two voters in each home, a
total of forty, and multiply that by the number of residential
blocks in the city. The poor souls wouldn't stand a chance of
being reelected. Why they would want to be, I'll never under-
stand - they take enough gutf as it is without asking for more.
\ Jim, when you get home, tell the good burghers in your City Hall
that in Seattle we have learned how to live withouraelves and with
each other. We don't needlessly harass our citlzensl"

To those words of wisdom from the far West, I will add these com-
ments. I have just received the November issue of City Hall and I noticed
that the heading in the boldest type reads "PARKING REGULATIONS WILL BE
ENFORCED - BE INFORMED." One is immediately impressed that this is the
most important topic covered in the publication. I noted that &nyone who
parks in front of his home for more that six (6) hours will be tagged.
Does this mean that our police force will spend it's time chalk marking
the left front tire of every car parked on the street? And then re-
trace the route six (6) hours later to trap the unwary violator of this
all important ordinance. And woe unto the one who ha.s the right front
tire marked - she, or he, is in double jeopardy.

If our City Council believes that a made-work program is needed
for the police Department, why not paint a white line at the exits from
our two on sale DWI production establishments. Then our police officers
could require that all patrons walk a straight line before driving out
to endanger the public. This procedure might even protect our citizens
more than the six (6) hour parking limitation, and help convince our
new Chief of Police that he didn't inherit a department consisting of
Meter Maids.

But in a more serious vein, Police Departments exist for the
protection of the public and not for mindless harassment of those who
pay their salaries.

Algast ~espec~~ed'
