CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br />WHEREAS Earl Bakken, founder of Medtronic and pioneer in the field of medical technology, <br />passed away in October 2018; and <br />WHEREAS Bakken dedicated his life to using his interest in electronics and his passion for helping <br />others to positively change patients' lives, not letting humble beginnings or an initial <br />lack of resources hinder his mission; and <br />WHEREAS Bakken worked through difficult times, working to build relationships with doctors, <br />and working to adapt the technology of the time to implement viable healthcare <br />solutions; and <br />WHEREAS Over time, Bakken's company grew into a major medical technology company that <br />serves physicians in 80 countries while working to improve the cardiovascular and <br />neurological health of individuals all over the world; and <br />WHEREAS Bakken was an innovator not just of medical devices but also of corporate leadership, <br />coaching his staff to: consider service and the needs of customers first, to focus on <br />critical listening instead of talking, to create diverse teams who engage in productive <br />discussion and find better solutions, to use rules and policies to steer but not stifle <br />innovation; and <br />WHEREAS not only were Bakken's personal values very much like the long-term values adopted <br />and held by the City of New Brighton, his innovation and leadership cleared the way <br />for an entire industry, resulting in untold economic growth in our city and creating <br />previously unimaginable improvements to our healthcare system that have touched <br />every family in our city; <br />NOW, THEREFORE I, VALERIE JOHNSON, Mayor of The City of New Brighton, Minnesota do <br />&MA"a - hereby celebrate the life and contributions o£ <br />I <br />WJJ BRIGHTON <br />building tomorrow today <br />Earl Bakken <br />IN -WITNESS WHEREOF, <br />hand and c sed the Seal <br />Minnesota t o affixed this 2a <br />VALERIE JOHNSON - <br />in the City of New Brighton. <br />I have hereunto set my <br />r the City of New Brighton, <br />*y of January, 2019. <br />YOR <br />4-9 <br />
