<br />;j <br /> <br />"-' <br /> <br />.' <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 89-136 <br /> <br />CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br />COUNTY OF RAMSEY <br />STATE OF MINNESOTA <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 23RD AS <br />"SCHMALTZBAUER WEEK" IN NEW BRIGHTON <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in 1889 German ill1Itligrant, Otto Schmaltzbauer at <br />the age of 24 established residence in New Brighton, six years <br />after he began working as a butcher in the New Brighton <br />stockyards; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in 1895 he wed Ida Chappatter and they raised a <br />family of 12 children in New Brighton; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, as an honest and frugal <br />groceries, and general merchandise in <br />purchased parcels of land, houses, and <br />including the historic Transit House and <br />in downtown New Brighton during the early <br /> <br />merchant of meats, <br />New Brighton, Otto <br />commercial buildings <br />the Martston Building <br />1900's; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, by 1920, Otto Schmaltzbauer had established him- <br />self as a successful businessman, cattleman, butcher, realtor, <br />financier, and village official. He was Village Trustee in <br />1912 and financed New Brighton projects such as the first water <br />well, sewer lines; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in 1920 Ida died at the age of 42 years of com- <br />plications following childbirth, but Otto continued to live in I <br />New Brighton for most of his life, living to be 87 years old; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, today Otto and Ida Schmaltzbauer are buried in the <br />(fam~y plot in St. John's Cemetery in New Brighton; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, New Brighton's colorful history shows many <br />threads traced to Otto and Ida Schmaltzbauer, their 12 <br />children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even great, <br />great grandchildren, many of whom still reside in the New <br />Brighton area and are active in local churches and civic ! <br />affairs. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City <br />of New Brighton to hereby recognize the Otto Schmaltzbauer <br />Family for their many contributions to the history and <br />development of New Brighton. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED to declare the week of October 23rd as <br />"Schmaltzbauer Week" in New Brighton as a token of our sin- <br />cerest appreciation. <br /> <br />R~r <br /> <br />..
