<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS <br /> <br />CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br /> <br />Pursuant to notice thereof, a regular meeting of the New Brighton City Council was held Monday, June 10, 1996, at 7:36 <br />p.m. in the municipal building, 803 Fifth Avenue NW. <br /> <br />Present: <br /> <br />Mayor Benke, Councilmembers Gunderman, Larson, Samuelson and Williams. <br /> <br />Absent: <br /> <br />None <br /> <br />Also Present: <br /> <br />Maurie Anderson, Park and Recreation Director <br />Matthew Fulton, City Manager <br />John Kelley, Police Chief <br /> <br />Council A!;"enda <br /> <br />Motion by Gunderman, seconded by Williams, to APPROVE COUNCIL AGENDA. <br /> <br />5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried. <br /> <br />Benke introduced Dennis Guldan, the June Council member of the Month. <br /> <br />Council Minutes <br /> <br />Motion by Samuelson, seconded by Larson, to WAIVE THE READING AND <br />APPROVE THE MAY 28, 1996, COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES. <br /> <br />5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried. <br /> <br />Commission Minutes <br /> <br />Mayor Benke, with Council consent, received the minutes of the Cable Advisory <br />Commission - April 25, 1996. <br /> <br />Special Order of Business <br /> <br />Police Chief John Kelley presented Officer Dan Olson with the 1995 Police Officer of <br />the Year Award. The award criteria included, but not necessarily limited to: excellence <br />and delivery of police service; heroic actions; outstanding community service; and <br />devotion to duty, community, and department. Olson was presented a cast bronze <br />statute of a police officer holding a child's hand. Kelley explained that Olson <br />represented commitment to the community by accomplishments such as: crime <br />prevention activities involving the crime-free multi-housing program, apartment <br />manager's coalition, and crime prevention education for senior citizen,,; management of <br />the departmental fleet; donation of many hours for the betterment of the community; and <br />an active member of the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Department. <br /> <br />Council presented retiring Wilshire Park School principal, Dr. David Abrahamson, with <br />a Certification of Appreciation for his commitment and service to the community. <br />Gunderman said it has been a privilege to have worked and known Abrahamson. <br /> <br />Abrahamson thanked Council for this honor from a community he dearly loves. As <br />serving as principal at the now closed Silver Oaks School, he felt New Brighton should <br />be recognized and worked to rename the district to the St. Anthony/New Brighton <br />School District.
