September 5, 1990 Park Board Minutes
2
Kreidler said LRHA currently schedules about 1,200 hours of
time with their traveling team alone. Feel they could get up
to 1,800-1,900 hours scheduled. This would give enough hours
so the operating budget would be met. The rink could be open
all year and used for soccer and other community events. LRHA
figures an operating revenue of about $153,000 and expenses of
about $100,000.
Kreidler feels LRHA could get their whole program in the ice
arena in New Brighton. LRHA is proposing a barebones ice arena
in New Brighton. Need about 3 1/2 acres.
Seward asked if the School District had been approached.
Kreidler said he wasn't sure but he didn't think so.
Van Hatten asked if the ice arena would be part of the
community center.
Johnson said that the ice arena with the community center would
be a first class facility. The ice arena being proposed by
LRHA is a barebones ice arena. It would not fit in with the
community center.
Eichers said he doesn't want to run the arena like Roseville
where there is no free skating time. If it is going to be in
New Brighton, would like to see it open to the public and not
used only for hockey.
Kreidler said-the City is promised so many hours. The City has
control over how they use the rink.
Anderson said we would have a balance between. hockey and other
skating.
Johnson said the barebones facility could be on the Miller
property away from the community center or build a first class
ice arena with the community center.
Seward stated the City needs all the property designated for
the community center.
Anderson said there has been property designated on the
community center site for an ice arena. Giving LRHA the land
doesn't cost the City more because the City has to purchase the
property anyway.
Van Hatten commented that if parking is a concern with having a
first class ice arena at the community center perhaps the City
could approach St. John's and use their parking lot.
Anderson said that was a good idea.
Van Hatten asked if there are advantages to building the ice
arena at the same time as the community center.
