Frequent exercisers have not become limited by aging. 20% of the people in each age group have been determined to be frequent participators in some sort of recreational activity. Also of importance, as age increases, participation in group activities (sports) tends to decrease. Currently the largest number of people participating in sports and physical exercise fall in the age group of 18-44. The population of this age group is expected to increase over the next 10 years and then begin its gradual reduction. Two activities are particularly important because they involve specialized facilities. Ice skating has been declining slightly while swimming is increasing, particularly in older age groups. Swimming participation rates are fairly high while- those involved in skating are less than 20% of the population. Over 50% of swimmers are under 25. Of adult swimmers over 25 years old, fully 70% have stronger interest in splashing in the. water as opposed to active swimming. New Brighton age growth and trends are expected to be fairly constant over the next 20 years. Over the next 10 years,. a significant increase in the number of 25-34 years old is expected, the number of 35-44 year olds should remain stable, and there will likely be an increase in the over 45 population. We can also expect to see an increase in the rate of participation in recreational events. In the following decade this change will likely involve a decrease in active events and an increase in social events. One thing the Task Force has to keep in mind when planning a community center, is that while serving the present and the past, we also have to serve the future. The previously mentioned trends will play a key~part in what this facility includes. COMMUNITY CENTER TOURS In discussing the similarities and differences of the four facilities visited by the Task Force May 20th, it was noted that none of the facilities provided for every activity. The Task Force .agreed that it is important to maintain a good balance between the active and the social events, and at the same time provide attractive indoor and outdoor space.
