December 6, 1989 Park Board Minutes
4
MOTION BY CARLSON, SECONDED BY OLSON, TO SEND A THANK YOU
LETTER TO THE NEW BRIGHTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR THE MONEY
DONATED FOR THE SENIOR CITIZEN VAN. MOTION CARRIED.
B. Community Center Update
Anderson .said as mentioned earlier there was a recent meeting
with the National Guard. There will not be another meeting
until the first of the year. The City has directed the
Financial Policy Advisory Board to look at the financing of
the community center. We are trying to nail down a site. If
we do the community center with the National Guard we will look
strongly at the Bury site. It is close to Long Lake Park. The
referendum may be scheduled for late March.
Seward asked what kind of mil rate we are looking at.
Anderson said he doesn't know yet, that is what the person the
city hired will be looking at. When the survey was taken a
majority of the people said. they would vote yes if it was under
$52,00 year.
Ocel said many of the middle age people see no need for a
community center, It needs publicity.
Anderson yes we plan to give it publicity but we will let
people know how it really is. Would like to see it separated
where you could vote for the community center with a pool or
the community center without the pool. In talking with Bill
Morris, it was asked how do you talk to people who don't want a
community .center. He said you don't, you talk to others that
want it. Usually the senior citizens are the ones that are not
in favor but because Edgewood is closing we may have more
support from them.
Carlson said many may not vote rather than vote against it.
Anderson said so far there has not been any definite
opposition.
Carlson said he wasn't sure we should give voters the option of
a pool or no pool, Would like to have a quality community
center with a pool or no community center at all. We should
put together a package we can be proud of and not start
separating items.
C.
