March 1, 1989 Park Board Minutes
2
Johnson said the committee voted to go ahead with combining the
two parcels into one park. There was an update on the pavilion.
It will be ready this spring.
Ocel asked about the trail.
Johnson said there is about 1 mile of trail that is going in this
year up to Mississippi and down by the boat launch. Abridge is
needed and is not funded this year.
Mack said legislative funding of CIP the program is questionable.
No money this year. It is in the first set of priorities for
1990.
Johnson asked if there was money in the park fund.
Mack said we need to look at how much; there may not be enough to
fund it all.
V. A. Presentation by Greg Mack, Ramsey County Park and Recreation
Director
Greg Mack said he would bring the Park Board up to date on Ramsey
County and what. their goals are.
Ramsey County is one of 10 regional systems. In Ramsey County
there are 5 regional parks and 2 trail corridors. Regional parks
are: Long Lake, Snail Lake, Bald Eagle-Otter Lakes, Battle Creek
and Keller/Phalen. There-are many county parks, several picnic
areas and golf courses, and two regional trail corridors.
The .City of St. Paul maintains some regional parks also.
The County will be concentrating on county parks that have lake
access for redevelopment. They haven't had a lot of attention
over the years. There are about 1,000 acres of wetland property.
In some cases the land was purchased to avoid storm sewers but
these areas have wildlife areas and cross country ski trails.
Some of the special use facilities are: 10 ice arenas, two golf
courses and archery range.
There are about 5,000 acres of water/ice in the lakes within
Ramsey County. The county provides about 11,000 acres of water
or land. It's good because it's all accessible but bad because
it gets heavily used.
A high priority is to get the word out about our park system.
Eichers asked if Keller Golf Course was going to be rebuilt.
Mack said yes. It's in the CIP for 1989. First they will look
and see if their revenue producing facilities are up to speed.
Looking at major renovation, watering system and taking care of
trouble areas, remodeling clubhouse.
