May 4, 1988 Park Board Minutes 4
Johnson said it is much safer for the people coming from
the north to get to the park by this trail.
Ocel stated that she is new .to the Park Board but she is
a biker and stated that if anyone has biked on Long Lake
Road, they know that you could get killed. Think this
trail is a great idea.
Dr. Edward Johnson, 1234 16th Ave. NW, said he is all for
biking. He compliments the concept but expresses his
concern for the people living on the lake. He can
envision people picnicking along the trail. There are
some parties now and it has a strong impact on the
environment. Those in the area pay a good deal of taxes.
All for the outdoors and biking, but don't feel it will
be used just for biking.
Johnson said that sometimes when there is a development,
these problems disappear, the enticement is gone..
Brandt asked if "No Picnicking" signs could be installed.
Anderson said the times he has walked the area he .has
rarely walked it without seeing someone. Have seen
litter and the graffiti on the wall is bad. When you get
to Pike Lake Drive the graffiti stops. The Hwy. Dept.
was asked to paint over graffiti, think with use there
will be less of a problem than there currently is. In
answer to Brandt's question, yes signs can be put up.
Anderson said he was at Hansen Park last night when the
lights were on. About 200 people use that trail. Have
not yet received a complaint. We always have objections
when we develop a park or trails but do get calls from
realtors who want to know if a home or property is close
to a park or trails. This is an asset to home buyers.
Carolyn Kreibich, 1325 N. Pike Lake Trail, said her main
concern is the wildlife. Much of the wildlife in that
area has diminished because of the development in the
area i.e. Lunds. Have herons and black capped herons on
the lake. If we keep developing, we'll lose the
wildlife.
