September 28, 1988
To: Pike Lake Area Residents
From: Maurice H. Anders ctor of Parks and Recreation
Re: Pike Lake Trail Meeting
The City is considering the construction of a trail connecting the Pike
Lake area with the new regional park on Long Lake. The trail will run
from Pike Lake Drive on the west to Long Lake Road on the east. The
proposed trail will be 8' wide bituminous, unlighted and will be
designed to accommodate bikers and pedestrians.
The New Brighton Park Board will be considering the Pike Lake trail
issue at its October 5, 1988 meeting. The meeting will be held at the
New Brighton City Hall in the. Council Chambers at 7:30pm.
The City has a tentative agreement with the United Church of Christ to
locate the trail on the most southerly portion of their property. The
City is currently negotiating with the Minnesota Department of
Transportation for property the Department owns immediately north of the
noise wall. The Department has indicated a willingness to transfer that
property to the City at no cost to the City.
The City has been in contact with wildlife specialists from the
Department of Natural Resources and they have indicated that they are
not aware of a heron nesting site at Pike Lake but if one is located
they would be willing to assist the City in reducing impact of a trail
on a nesting site.
A concept plan will be submitted to the Park Board at the October
meeting. If the Board approves the plan and recommends proceeding with
the trail development, the plan will be submitted to the City Council
for its consideration, approval of a budget, and agreement with the
church and MN DOT will also occur at this time. Construction would
occur late this fall or in the spring of 1989.
If you have questions that you would like answered in advance of the
meeting, please contact me at 633-8906.
