CIVIC CENTER SIGN PLAN
9-20-05 draft
The City of New Brighton operates several buildings that carry out many local government functions.
Administrative activities,including Council chambers are located at 803 Old Highway 8 NW;recreational
and educational services are centered at the building at 400 10th Street NW;and finally,all public safety
related services are centered at 785 Old Highway 8 NW.
By their very nature,the functions of the three buildings have city-wide effect. Consequently,it is
important that appropriate signage for the three sites guides residents and others utilizing City services.
Furthermore,it is important that all Civic signs are cohesive and of a high quality.
The City Council may,by special permit,establish special regulations for signs that are either more
restrictive or less restrictive than those provided by the Zoning Code. The general purposes of sound
identification,reduction or clutter,and aesthetic enhancement shall be the controlling standard.
A"Comprehensive Sign Plan,"when approved by City Council,shall constitute the permitted signs for that
area and any future change to the plan shall be submitted under special permit procedure and when
adopted shall become part of that plan.
Civic Campus Sign Plan Objectives:
• introduce pedestrians,bicyclists, and motorists to major Civic buildings in
downtown New Brighton
• identify building entrances;
• identify major activities in the building;
• create an overall image and identity for the Civic Campus
SIGN REGULATIONS
A hierarchy of sign types has been developed to address the objectives listed above.All of the signs are
intended to reflect a common theme and identity. The matrix on the pages following shall be the guiding
regulations for the following Civic sites:
1. 400 10t1 Street NW(Family Service/Community Center)
2. 803 Old Highway 8 NW(City Hall)
3. 785 Old Highway 8 NW(Public Safety Facility)
I:\COMMISSIONS\PLANNING\Reports\2005\09-20-05\SP 05-08_Civic Center Sign SUP.doc 2
