Jacobson, Director of Public Safety
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this
Comments attached
Recommendation:
Accept the Public Safety Commission's recommendation that the stop sign request for
McCallum Drive at Riviera Drive be denied.
Legislative .History:
City Council received a petition from the McCallum/Riviera Drive neighborhood on November
28, 2006 requesting a stop sign. The residents indicated that the "traffic volume is extremely
high and moves extremely fast". Council referred the petition to the Public Safety Commission.
Financial Impact:
N/A.
Explanation:
The Public Safety Commission met on March 28, 2007. As part of their regular meeting, the
Commissioners discussed the petition asking far the stop sign. Several residents took part in the
discussion as did City Engineer Grant Wyffels. City Engineer did indicate that a stop sign did
not meet "warrants" and also distributed a traffic study (see attached) far that intersection which.
noted that sight distance exceeds 70 feet, traffic counts are typical of local residential streets and.
in fact carry very little through traffic. Also speed cart data results show that speeds average 23
mph an McCallum Drive and 19 mph on Riviera, and, that in reviewing the criteria for four way
and two way stop signs that the criteria to meet "warrant" for a stop sign. is not met. Residents
did indicate that speed and concern for children in the neighborhood is still a concern.
Commissioners did indicate that they did not believe that a stop sign was appropriate, but, would
like to see the speed. cart used frequently and far the City to review other signage as may be
deemed appropriate by the City Engineer.
The Commissioners voted at the April 25t~' Public Safety Commission to support the City
Engineers recommendation to deny the request far a stop sign. The Commissioners also
suggested that Public Safety and the City Engineer continue to work with the neighborhood on
their speed/tr ~c concerns to include use of the speed watch program.
Robe Jacobson
Direc of Public Safety
I.\COUNCIL\REPORTS\2UU7\Public Safety\MeCallum-Riviera Stop Sign.doc
