. Parks and Recreation Department Happenings
March 2007

. IMPROVE HEALTH
o The City of New Brighton was chosen to be the pilot program for Active
Living Ramsey County's 1,000 benches initiative. As a result we will receive
approximately 8 recycled benches, at a total value of nearly $10,000. These
benches will include a concrete pad, brick plaques, a motivational or
inspirational message and will be installed with no direct costs to the City.
The benches are being placed along a route beginning at the FSC and
continuing to Main Street Village. The purpose of the benches is to encourage
walking, to increase physical activity, to specific destination points. In
addition, as we develop the NWQ, we will have the option to purchase
additional benches at a 50% discount.

.

. PROTECT NATURAL RESOURCES
o The woodlot improvement project at 3rd. St. NW/14th Ave. NW is nearly
complete. Several hundred buckthorn bushes were removed. In addition,
dozens of dead and hazardous trees were taken out. Five (5) firewood permits
(wood pick-up only) were issued. There are over a hundred stumps remaining
to be ground down. Replanting plans have been set for Arbor Day (Saturday,
April 28th at 9:00 am) in this location. Over 100 new trees and shrubs will be
planted. Among the species will be oaks, maples, hackberries, ironwoods,
dogwoods, and serviceberries.
o City and contract trimmers have completed winter trimming activities.
Hundreds of park and boulevard trees were trimmed. Homeowners are being
reminded not to trim oaks in April, Mayor June so as not to spread oak wilt
disease.

. FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
o Soccer mini camp started the week of March 26th, this provides kids ages 3-6
with introductory skills to soccer; 63 kids are enrolled. A new program,
soccer agility training, has 25 participants enrolled and is geared for kids 7-l3.
o A Minnesota Twins Clinic special event was secured and will be held May 5th
at the FSC. Coaches from the Minnesota Twins will provide instruction for
baseball/softball skills while promoting teamwork and working hard to
achieve success.

.

. SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSmILITY
o The recreation division has secured an intern to assist with spring and summer
planning and preparation for recreation programs.
o The North Suburban Church Softball league was acquired which will bring in
an additional 16 teams to our summer adult softball program.
o The FSC Eagles Nest had 156 birthday parties in March 2007. March 2006
the Eagles Nest had 122.
