Of Report Number:
BM Agenda Section:
111rNReport Date August s 2007
the city that works I'or you Council Meeting Date Aug. 14 2007

REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Authorization for Pike Lake Trail Extension

DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: Sandy Breuer, Director of Parks and Recreation

CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:

No comments to su lement this re art Comments attached

Recommendation:
Approve the extension of Pike Lake Trail and award the contract to North Valley, Inc. in the amount of
$13,256.50.

Legislative History:
The current Pike Lake Trail was built in 2002.
Explanation:
The existing 8 foot trail will continue from the west end, extend up on the south side of Pike Lake Drive
to Thomdale, to a future sidewalk, to be constructed by the developer, in Brighton Village_ The trail
extension will allow residents walking access to the businesses in Brighton Village as well as expand our
trail system to encourage walking, biking, and in-line skating to continue to promote physical activity and
• wellness throughout our community. The extension will be 1,115 lineal feet or 0.21 miles of trail.

Letters were sent to all addresses within 350 feet of the proposed trail extension. Three resident
correspondences were received & alternatives were discussed. Residents want the trees preserved. Brush
will be thinned and trees removed; five medium-larger size trees will be removed due to disease, damage
and to save trees that are growing too close together. A reduced trail size was considered, however this
alternative was not chosen due to cost, passing room and ease of snow removal. Putting the path on the
street was considered, but it has been a long standing practice of the city to not stripe paths on existing
streets because of pedestrian and bicyclist safety precautions. Extending the trail all the way to the
694/Silver Lake Road Intersection was considered but not chosen due to the grading, cost, and Brighton
Village development includes a network of connecting sidewalks. The NO PARKING signs will remain
in place on Pike Lake Dr. S. once the new trail is built.
Three attachments are provided: e-mail from a resident, map of proposed trail and map of development
showing the sidewalk connections.
Costs and Funding:
Quotes for the extension were taken through July 17, 2007. Five quotes ranging in price from
$13,256.50 - $20,350.30 were received. In addition there will be approximately $1,500 in fees for
the clearing of grub trees and brush. Funding will come from the Park Dedication Fund.

Sandy Breuer -,'~~R .
