Comments Re. Potential for Improved Economic Vitality, Cont.
No vlus Comment
1. I realize things can be improved. I don't feel that HRA is the
right tool - for these reasons - the cost is vague - the HRA program
has not been successful in other areas. Too inany present businesses
will not relocate, thus losing present revenue - that must be made
up by others.
2. For the most part I feel New Brighton needs development in the
first place, not redevelopment. Bring industry to the vacant areas
first, then think about redeveloping existing industry.
3• No, I honestly believe some of the businessmen will retire; a
large percentage will move out of the community and those who stay
will not realize any greater profit in different facilities because
of the increased cost.
I do not believe HRA can create a "Rockefeller Center" that will pull
in customers. Apache, Rosedale, Hai+11ar etc. have the big stores to
pull in the crowd which helps promote the survival of the small shops.
There's no reason for small shops to move to N.B. because there will
never be a big crowd there. ... New Brighton is one of the last
available examples of small hometown businesses which are owned and
operated by families. These provide services for New Brighton and
other villages.
... Our building fits our need and increased rent from fancy facilities
will drive us out. The chances of us remaining are about one in a
thousand.
I believe most people like NB businesses because they reflect the small
hometown environment and most people know the owners.
If some remodeling and dress -up is needed why not work on that locally
without the squander of Big Govt & HRA. Try to help the merchants -
not drive them out. ...
4. I consider this plan a disaster for the entire city.
5. No, I don't think the plan will work.
6. Probably would not affect us, but would definately affect some
of our competitors. We are definately against what HRA is proposing
be done with the tax increment plan and feel they have stretched
things too far beyond the original intent of City Council.,
7. Never could there be enough to compensate for the.cost of new
building - loss of business, rebuilding business, and the fact that
everyone is frozen (as far as sale, etc.) while the project goes on.
None of these things is helpful.
Would everyone on the Task Force and Council agree that (1) their homes
be frozen (for resale) & (2) contribute a good portion of their wages
to this project for the 20 years or more that it must take (regardless
of what is said) to accomplish such a grandeose undertaking? Not likely.
Or - for that` matter would any Lcitizen) wish to do these things -
to help change the community - not just for a year or two - but the life
