BR16NI0
The Twin Cities Metropolitan Area is facing increasingly challenging
transportation problems. Traffic congestion, energy and resource con-
servation, and environmental concerns all demand a comprehensive,
future oriented transportation program. The Metropolitan Transit Com-
mission (MTC) and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT)
believe park -ride facilities, by encouraging the use of efficient high
occupancy vehicles, whether they be car pools, van pools, or buses, are
an important element in such a program.
The park -ride concept combines the convenience of the auto with the
efficiencies of high occupancy vehicles. The net result can be reduced
traffic congestion, reduced air pollutants, energy conservation, and
more efficient use of existing streets and highways.
Communities will benefit by having an improved transportation service,
and by having attractive, convenient facilities available where citizens
can catch buses or form car pools and van pools.
The concept of park -ride facilities is not new in the Twin Cities area.
Currently, approximately 2,000 park -ride spaces have been developed in
cooperation with churches, shopping centers, and other activity centers.
We suggest working together to continue developing additional joint -use
park -ride lots. However, there is a need to complement these facilities
with parking lots which are publicly owned and maintained.
The MTC and Mn/DOT are currently considering developing a comprehensive
program of park -ride facilities located throughout the Twin Cities
Metropolitan Area, which would consist of:
1. 3,000 park -ride spaces developed in conjunction with privately
owned activity centers.
2. 120 parking spaces developed on property presently owned by the MTC.
3. 7,500 park -ride spaces developed on land which is presently publicly
owned or purchased specifically fora park -.ride use.
