WN of Work Session Item <br />BRUAthe city that?'ON 1/22/2008 <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION <br />ITEM DESCRIPTION: City Council discussion regarding the appointing of future committee, <br />commission, and task force members. <br />DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: <br />CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL: <br />No comments to supplement this report Comments attached <br />Recommendation: <br />City staff is seeking City Council guidance regarding the process for appointing future <br />committee, commission, and task force members. <br />Legislative History: <br />None <br />Financial Impact: <br />None <br />Explanation: <br />Based upon City Council's discussion at the January 8a' work session meeting, City staff has <br />compiled a list of the City's current committees and commissions. The following is a list of the <br />City's active commission/committees and an overview of their roles and responsibilities: <br />Economic Development Authority <br />The New Brighton Economic Development Authority (EDA) was established in 1993. <br />Minnesota Statutes, Sections 469.090 through 469.108, authorizes cities to establish Economic <br />Development Authorities (EDA) with specified powers and obligations to promote and to <br />provide incentives for economic development. <br />Planning Commission <br />This seven member citizen commission advises the City Council on all city land use planning <br />matters. Duties include the development and maintenance of the New Brighton Comprehensive <br />Plan, carrying out procedures directed by the City Council and making recommendations to the <br />Council. The Planning Commission meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. <br />Parks, Recreation, and Environmental Commission <br />This seven member commission advises the City Council on the proper use and care for parks <br />and the natural environment and advises on policies covering recreational activities of the City. <br />Issues relating to the Family Service Center also come under the duties of the commission.
