0
•
VII.
0
D. Trail Committee Update — Tom Trevorrow
Tom stated the Trail Committee met this evening at 5:30 p.m.; just prior to this
meeting. The focus this evening was to go over the Comprehensive Plan Update.
Tom asked the Commission to look over the Trails and Sidewalk System Plan
Strategy. If you have any suggestions or changes, please let Jason West know.
Tom stated that there are about 10 items of focus and several of them have already
been completed. We have accomplished quite a bit since this Committee's
inception. Update on the Hansen Park Trail. As a review, we received a $175,000
grant from "Safe Routes to Schools". There are a couple of proposals for the trail
and committee members to review at the next meeting. There is a Public -Works
street construction project and the Committee agreed that part of the project woul(
be done by Ramsey County and this would be a good time to work on some of the
signage issues that have come up in the past for our bike trails.
Lisa Harreld will be the new Committee Chair.
Lisa Harreld is also on the Active Living Ramsey County which is comprised of
citizens and staff from each of the 17 cities in Ramsey County, also County staff
and a person from MNDOT. The committee's focus is to improve the bike trails
we have now, identify the current bike, trails and getting a good mapping system
going for Ramsey County. After that we will work with other counties. The next
meeting is March 13d'. There are about 25 people on this committee.
The last thing discussed was the DNR grant update. This is the third time this
grant has been submitted. It is for $100,000. It will be submitted February 28th.
Jason West stated it is a $100,000 matching grant; the City would also contribute
$100,000. It is primarily focused on the south park of the Northwest Quadrant and
the trail connections to Long Lake. We will find out in July if we have been
Jeanne Frisclunan stated that the Comprehensive Plan that Tom was referring to
would be attached to the Strategic Plan. It is important that we get feedback from
residents and anyone that has suggestions as to what you would like to see the
Trails Committee focus on in terms of priorities. Anyone interested in attending
the next meeting on March 5th at 5:30 p.m., here at City Hall is welcome.
Chair Updates
Chair Frischman wanted to take this opportunity to recognize Jason West, who is
stepping in as Acting Director of New Brighton Parks and Recreation. Jason was
also recently honored for two awesome awards; the Presidential Citation Award,
given by the Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association. The second award was
the Jack Niles award also given by the Minnesota Recreation and Parks
Association. Frischman also went on to say that Andy Soltvedt, Recreation
Supervisor also received the Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association
Meritorious Service Award. Frischman stated that we have some outstanding
staff in our Parks and Recreation Department. Not only do we recognize this in
New Brighton, but outside of New Brighton as well.
