H. AUTHORIZE THE PURCHASE OF
SIGNAGE AND PAINT MATERIALS TO BE INSTALLED FOR THE ABOVE BHS LANE.
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: Sandy BrWr; Director of Parks and Recreation
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
No
Recommendation:
Authorize Ramsey County to install a bike lane on Long Lake Road from I-694 to County Road H.
Authorize the purchase of signage and paint materials to be installed for the above bike lane.
Legislative History:
None
Financial Impact:
The City of New Brighton would be responsible for the cost of signage for the bike lane. The city would also be
responsible for the painting of bike lane symbols and directional markings. Ramsey County has agreed to install
Ak bike lane signage purchased by the city, and to perform any future maintenance as needed to the striping and
materials.
Explanation:
In February of 2008, the Trails Committee was informed of the proposed street reconstruction projects in New
Brighton for 2008. The construction project on Long Lake Road was viewed as an important opportunity to
increase pedestrian traffic flow from north to south in the New Brighton community. The Trails Committee made
a recommendation to Parks and Recreation staff to initiate contact with Ramsey County to understand the
feasibility of installing a bike lane on Long Lake Road from County Road H to I-694.
Parks and Recreation staff have worked collaboratively with Public Works staff to develop a proposal that abides
by the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Ramsey County Parks and Recreation and Public
Works have offered their support for the project along with the New Brighton Parks and Recreation Department
and Public Works Department.
The Bike Lane project was presented to the Public Safety Commission on April 30, 2008 and at the Parks,
Recreation and Environmental Commission on May 7, 2008. Both Commissions unanimously approved the
project and recommended that the City Council approve the recommendation. This is an exciting opportunity as
New Brighton would be the first suburban community in Ramsey County with a designated bike lane.
Costs and Funding:
The estimated cost to the City for bike lane symbols and signage is approximately $2,500. It is recommended that
40 funding for this project be paid for with Park Dedication fees.
Brad Martens, Recreation Supervisor
Attachment: Memo
I\COUNCMWt R25Wuk and Re honk ik Lane Recd ndaion.doc
