VABRUM
Wr city that works Rw yriu
Memo
To: City Council
From: Brad Martens, Recreation Sup or -F Operations
Subject: Long Lake Road, bike lane
Date: May 8, 2008
Background:
In February of 2008 the Trails Committee was informed of proposed street
reconstruction projects scheduled to take place in New Brighton for 2008. Included in
the plan is the reconstruction of Long Lake Rd from 1-694 to 19th St. NW. The
• construction project on Long Lake Road was viewed as an important opportunity to
increase north/south pedestrian traffic flow in the New Brighton community. Trails
Committee members made a recommendation that staff initiate contact with Ramsey
County in order to understand the feasibility of installing a bike lane on Long Lake Rd.
Due to the importance of this opportunity, the committee recommended that the bike
lane be extended beyond 19th St. NW and continue northward to County Rd. H.
Over the last two months, Parks and Recreation staff have worked collaboratively with
New Brighton and Ramsey County Public Works staff to develop a bike lane design
proposal that abides by the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Ramsey County staff have offered their support for the project along with a share of the
costs involved.
Design:
Attached to this document you will find the design proposals for the striping of Long
Lake Rd. The 50' design is designated for the portion of Long Lake Rd. between 1-694
and 14th St. NW. The 40' design is designated for the portion of Long Lake Rd between
14th St. NW and County Rd. H. (See attachment).
MNDOT guidelines for a bike lane with Long Lake Road's Average Daily Traffic (ADT)
require a six foot designated lane for bicycles. The addition of bike lanes on Long Lake
Road are included while keeping the width of traffic lanes at 12 feet. Signage for the
• bike lane will be installed on "no parking" signs that already exist on Long Lake Rd.
IOU CUREPORTb12008\P s R re ionTii Lane Wmo.dx
