-3 - <br />Director Breuer thanked Atkinson for all of her effort on this project. A lot of <br />work, time and research have gone into this. It was a very time consuming project <br />and the equipment installation went in on an earlier timeline than anticipated. We <br />wanted to be competitive in the market, keep our memberships strong and <br />possibly gain new members. Our Department is very appreciative of the work <br />done on this project. <br />B. Staff Report — Brad Martens <br />Breuer stated that Martens has two power points; one on Safe Routes to Schools <br />and the other on his role as a Recreation Supervisor. <br />Martens stated we were awarded a Safe Routes to Schools grant in 2007 in the <br />amount of S 175,000. The grant is to: <br />• Enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school <br />• Make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing <br />transportation alternative <br />• Facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects that <br />will improve safety, reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution in <br />the vicinity of schools <br />Funds are to be used within two years. <br />Designs must be MNDOT approved <br />Includes infrastructure and non -infrastructure improvements <br />There are three different project sites. Improvements include: <br />Project Site One - Silver Lake Road over I-694 <br />• Bridge aesthetics including lighting <br />• Safer entrance and exit from bridge <br />Increase size of pedestrian storage area <br />Project Site Two — Path from Silver Lake Rd. to Highview Middle School <br />Project Site Three — A trail on the northwest side of Hansen Park <br />• Bituminous path on west side of Hansen Park <br />• Crossing improvements near Bel Air Elementary School <br />Progress Made: <br />Hansen Park <br />• Soil borings <br />• Cost analysis <br />• Seeking MnDOT approval <br />• Silver Lake Rd/I-694 Intersection <br />• Working to design safer crossing plan <br />• • Highview Middle School path <br />• Seeking MnDOT approval <br />Construction Goals: <br />• Begin August <br />• Sufficient progress for 2008-2009 school year <br />• Complete in 2009 <br />
