-2 - <br />Martens stated we are looking for a formal recommendation from the Parks, <br />• Recreation and Environmental Commission to the City Council to approve the <br />signage and biking lane on Long Lake Road from interstate 694 to County Road <br />H. <br />MOTION BY HEINRICH, SECONDED BY BUDZYNSKI, TO RECOMMEND <br />THE COUNCIL APPROVE THE SIGNAGE AND BIKE LANE ON LONG <br />LAKE ROAD FROM INTERSTATE 694 TO COUNTY ROAD H. MOTION <br />CARRIED. <br />The Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission thanked Martens' for his <br />presentation. <br />A. Staff Report — Patrice Atkinson <br />Patrice Atkinson, Recreation Supervisor, talked about fitness and wellness here in <br />New Brighton and will showcase the FSC Fitness Center. The amenities include: <br />indoor walking track, running track, cardio weights, gymnasium, group fitness and <br />wellness. <br />Atkinson informed the Commission of the Fitness and Wellness Fair in January <br />2009. The fair went from 8 vendors in 2006 to over 25 vendors scheduled for <br />2009. She also mentioned the numerous group fitness and wellness classes <br />available. The Commission was informed of increases in participation from 2006 <br />to 2007. <br />Atkinson also talked about the membership pass totals. There was a dip in <br />membership in 2006 and has increased in 2007. Membership trends are changing. <br />We are consolidating some memberships, i.e. our new corporate membership <br />plan. We use enticement memberships to increase enrollment and maintain <br />competitiveness with other health facilities that are popping up all over the area. <br />We have overhauled the Fitness Center and are doing membership drives. We <br />have increased insurance memberships by 23%. More people are able to quality <br />for insurance incentives. You can earn cash back toward your membership. You <br />can earn up to $20 per month toward your membership. We actually had senior <br />members who paid -0- for their membership. Our 2008 focus is to optimize <br />activity levels through new program initiatives, increase and retain membership. <br />Atkinson also talked about the new equipment in the Fitness Center. New cardio <br />pieces, strength training and also flat screen TVs. We also added medicine balls <br />and fitballs. The Fitness Center was gutted and renovated with all new equipment. <br />The floor was cleaned for the weight side. It was a fast installation and not much <br />down time for our members. <br />• We have new bikes and treadmills, new stretch area and area for the fitballs. The <br />Grand Opening is May 17`h from 8am-lpm. There will be free demos and food <br />and program sampling. Many prizes will be given away. Grand prize is a <br />recumbent bike. Drawing is May 23`d. <br />
