Approved
Public Hearings: ZA2008-003 Zoning Code Amendment concerning wall sign height in the
• NWQ, Northwest Quadrant District.
The applicant has requested an amendment to Zoning Code Section 6-750 concerning wall signs
within the NWQ, Northwest Quadrant zoning district. The ordinance in its current state limits
walls signs to a height of 15 feet above grade. Staff believes this standard was put in place to
ensure that signs maintain a pedestrian scale. The proposed amendment would allow wall signs
to be mounted at a height higher than 15 feet above grade for those properties having frontage on
I -35W and I-694.
The NWQ code was adopted on July 24, 2007 and became effective upon its publication on
August 1, 2007. The Ryan Companies project on behalf of Transoma Medical was the first
project to be reviewed against the new ordinance standards and also the first project requesting
Sign Permits under the NWQ standards. At the time of ordinance adoption, it was noted that
amendments to the ordinance would be necessary in and effort to respond to development
proposals.
Zisla recommended that the exception be clarified to state that the signs can be over 15' in height
on the facades that face I -35W and I-694.
Motion by Zisla, second by O'Brien to CLOSE THE PUBLIC HEARING.
• 7 ayes, 0 nays. MOTION APPROVED.
:Motion by O'Brien, second by Zisla to Recommend the City Council adopt the attached
Ordinance.
7 ayes, 0 nays. Motion Approved.
Announcements
Gundlach asked the Commissioners if Saturday delivery of the packets would allow adequate
review time if Friday delivery is not possible. The Commissioners agreed this would be
acceptable.
Adjournment: 8:20 PM
Janice Gundlach, City Planner
