lw"Of
the city that works for you
Report Number
Agenda Section
Report Date
Council Meeting Date
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Approval of 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program
08-083
VI -8
March 4, 2008
March 11, 2008
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: Robert J. Jacobson, Director of Public Safety
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
Recommendation:
Approval of the 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program award received from the
United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Legislative History:
The authority for AFG is derived from the Federal Fire Protection and Control Act of 1974 (15
U.S.C. §§ 2229 et seq.), as amended. Congress reauthorized AFG and appropriated a total of
$547 million for fiscal year 2007.
Financial Impact:
The approved project costs total to $12,280. The Federal share is 90 percent or $11,052 of the
approved amount and the City share of the costs is 10 percent or $1,228. For the second
consecutive year, Sam's Club donated $1,000 to the New Brighton Department of Public Safety
Fire Division to offset our share of the required match, leaving $228 to be covered by budget.
Explanation:
The purpose of the AFG program is to award grants directly to fire departments in order to more
effectively protect the health and safety of the public and their emergency response personnel
with respect to fire and all other hazards. The funds will allow for the purchase of
communications headsets to be installed in front-line apparatus of the Fire Division.
Costs and Funding:
The communications headsets cost $12,280. After accounting for the Sam's Club donation, the
remaining $228 required match will come from the Fire Division Small Equipment budget which
has adequate funding to cover these purchases.
Tony Paetzhick
Deputy Fire Chief — Training
