Of Report Number
IAMIFON
Agenda Section Report Date
the city that works for you Council Meeting Date
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
08-084
VI -9
March 412008
March 11, 2008
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Approval of 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program Award
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: Robert J. Jacobson, Director of Public
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
to
Recommendation:
Approval of the 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program award received from the
United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Legislative History:
The authority of this program is derived from the Federal Fire Protection and Control Act of
1974 (15 U.S.C. §§ 2229 et seq.), as amended. In fiscal year 2006, Congress reauthorized the
AFG and appropriated a total of $539,550,000 to the DHS Office of Grants and Training to carry
out the activities of the AFG program.
Financial Impact:
The approved project costs total to $15,300. The Federal share is 90 percent or $13,770 of the
approved amount and the City share of the costs is 10 percent or $1,530. Sam's Club previously
donated $1,000 to the New Brighton Department of Public Safety Fire Division to offset our
share of the required match, leaving $530 to be covered by budget.
Explanation:
The purpose of the AFG program is to award grants directly to fire departments in order to more
effectively protect the health and safety of the public and their emergency response personnel
with respect to fire and all other hazards. The funds will allow for the purchase of a new thermal
imager camera and two Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for use by the Fire Division.
Costs and Funding:
The thermal imager camera costs $11,000 and the two AEDs cost $4,300. After accounting for
the Sam's Club donation, the remaining $530 required match will come from the Fire Division
Small Equipment budget which has adequate funding to cover these purchases.
Tony Paetzhick IJ
Deputy Fire Chief— Training
