-5 -
but when they are there, people slow down. 17°i is a terrible street when school starts.
There have been shots fired in the park and it is a little bit disconcerting. As much as
we liked New Brighton in 1979 when we moved here, (we are looking for another
place to live) it is not like it was in 1979.
Elizabeth Barton, 14"' Ave NW
She was one of about a dozen parents that attended a meeting last spring talking about
this trail. Of the dozen parents there, nobody said they would let their children walk
through the park; unless they walked with them because of safety. She doesn't know
how well used this trail would be because of that reason. She has 7 children. She
would never let her children walk through the park alone. The existing path is much
safer because of visibility. Her main concern is safety. She feels a lot of parents share
that concern.
Bruce Cameron, 547 17`x' Ave NW
He lives just below the split. Most of the things he was going to say have been
adequately covered by Dennis, Perry and Norm. Most of the school year is during the
dark part of the year. Kids that are trying to get to Bel Air will probably not be in the
park when it is probably going to be dark. As far as the potential for predators or
people hiding; I certainly would not allow my children to walk in that area. The
general feel, as Dennis was saying, the view of the pond, you see people jogging or
walking their dogs, they spend most of their time looking at the water. I don't think
they would be very interested in looking into any of our back yards. To me it does not
make sense to make the loop as you are describing. If the existing path were
maintained, it would be a fun situation. There are really not very many kids walking
through the park, for some of the reasons that have just been discussed. The majority
of the traffic on the path is adults and people walking their dogs. It is so much better
for them to be in an area that is not someone else's back yard and that is out there
with the wild life and near the pond. Certainly hope you will give those ideas some
thought. The easement relative to the power line should be given some thought. I'm
not exactly sure how it would effect your decision, but when the original stakes were
found for his lot, it's the same line that the power line is on. The power line doesn't
split that easement. The back of my property line is right in line with the power line
and cable. Just another point to know exactly what we are dealing with for property
rights and what the park boundaries actually are.
Chair Frischman wanted to clarify one comment made by Dennis. She stated our
current Mayor is Steve Larson.
Dennis Guldan stated that when the park was laid out, the Mayor that was here to help
lay out the park, owns the property on the corner of 17`x' Ave and 5°i Street. He did a
ton of research on it. He was willing to give you the information at the meeting you
had last time and tell you all about the soil borings, why the park was laid out the way
it was, but he was basically thrown out of the meeting when he was offering that
information. He said, they aren't going to listen to me, so why should I say it. And he
didn't come back. He has valuable information about why things are the way they are
in the park. He lives right on the corner; the busiest area we have on 17°i and 5"'. The
kids hang out at his place, because they are not allowed to cross the street to go to
