Comments attached Recommendation: Approval of the 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program award received from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Legislative History: The authority for AFG is derived from the Federal Fire Protection and Control Act of 1974 (15 U.S.C. §§ 2229 et seq.), as amended. Congress reauthorized AFG and appropriated a total of $560 million for the fiscal year 2008 AFG. 40 Financial Impact: The approved project costs $8,000. The Federal share is 90 percent or $7,200 of the approved amount leaving $800 to be covered by the City budget. Explanation: The purpose of the AFG program is to award grants directly to fire departments in order to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and their emergency response personnel with respect to fire and all other hazards. The funds will allow for the purchase of pulse oximeters with carboxyhemoglobin sensors to be installed in front-line apparatus of the Fire Division. Costs and Funding: The pulse oximeters with carboxyhemoglobin sensors cost $8,000. The $800 required match will come from the Fire Division Small Equipment budget which has adequate funding to cover these purchases. The 2008 General.
