Page S
Trevorrow thought it could be an issue of the more competitive over the
is beginners.
Heinrich noted that he has observed bicycles on the skate park.
Breuer stated it is not designed for bikes. We have put up signs but they get
vandalized and removed.
Norton stated there are bikes specifically designed for that use. If they have one,
they would probably want to use it.
Frischman stated at the disc golf public hearing we had good representation from
people using the park. She feels that the reason the outcome was positive was
because the users were involved in the process. If we do go forward with a `public
hearing, she would like to see users involved in the process.
Budzynski said, the users are the youth. Will they come here to give us their input.
I don't know how we get that age group in here to participate.
Meyer said he feels they would want to give us their input.
Heinrich said we do not want to polarize or choose sides.
Trevorrow said let's invite everyone's input. Just have a discussion.
Samuelson said let's ask help on how to resolve this instead of just hearing
complaints.
Norton said he has been to the park numerous times. He hasn't seen a lot of
problems. He noted that there are a lot of older kids moving rapidly and when he
has his younger kids, he doesn't like it. With the playground and skate park in the
general area, you will have some interchange and sometimes it can make you
nervous, especially when you don't know the bigger kids. From the public health
point of view, it is so important to get kids out (he's involved in the field of
medicine). He sees kids on a daily basis who are having issues with weight. The
skate board park is one of those activities that is very intense. We are talking
about getting the pulse up and keeping it up. Kids like to do that and they keep
doing it. They are getting real exercise. He just hates to see that not being
available to as many kids as possible. When we look at the goals of the City parks,
it is to keep everyone active. If we can get the garbage cleared out and looking
nice, kids will recognize that and want to keep it that way.
Breuer made a few comments relating to a public hearing. Someone suggesting
holding the meeting in April, but she would suggest waiting even longer. We only
have a handful of names of kids that use that facility. We have addresses from the
petitions so we can do a direct mailing to all petitioners. "In the Neighborhood"
City newsletter comes out in April. It would be a good place to advertise the
public hearing if that is what you choose. We also have the neighborhood
meetings coming up in January and February. This may become an issue at this
park. We can let people know at this neighborhood meeting when the public
meeting will be.
