Page 6
Breuer said she has not heard from anyone since we received the first petition, but
it has been cold and snowy. Ironically Breuer heard from a Fridley resident that
iheard we were removing the skate board park and they wanted to buy our
equipment.
Harreld stated May would be a good time for the public hearing because we would
have had all the neighborhood meetings and put notices up and it would give us a
chance to approach it before it becomes a problem as the summer goes on.
Frischman stated we can state there will be a public hearing to discuss the future
of the skate board park at Freedom Park.
It is the recommendation of the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission
to the City Council, that we have a public hearing on the future of the skate park
at Freedom Park. The public hearing will be at the regular Parks, Recreation and
Environmental Commission meeting on May 6, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
Notification will be sent out to the people who have signed all three petitions. In
addition, we will use the Parks and Recreation Brochure, "In the Neighborhood"
newsletter and neighborhood meetings to inform residents.
A Commission member asked Ray Tandeski if he would like to make any
comments. Tandeski shared his; comments,; observations and ideas with the
Commission.
To better prepare for this meeting, it may be good to brainstorm on some of the
things we as a commission should have in front of us as far as facts and
information. These `things may include:
• Data from Public Safety — we would like to get information prior to and
after the re -purposing of Pike Lake (which was about three years ago).
• There are numerous communities that have skate parks and it would be
good for us to learn from some of them. Maybe Minneapolis or St. Paul.
We can find out what makes them work, what challenges they have, what
the resident's view points of the facilities are. Ron Meyer stated he could
make some phone calls and perhaps visit a few facilities.
C. Trails Committee Update — Lisa Harreld
Frischman stated that a new chair was voted in for the Trails Committee this
evening. A decision will be made about who will give the update at PREC
meetings in the future since the new chair is not a PREC member.
Harreld stated that Adam Parker is the new chair. He is very knowledgeable. She
stated they are fortunate to have so many knowledgeable people on the
Committee. We have ardent bikers, hikers, runners and skiers and we get very
good input in different areas of trails. We had a wish list session; or areas we
wanted to pursue in 2009. Want to continue the connectivity with New Brighton
and its bordering cities, Ramsey, Anoka and Hennepin Counties as well; working
with the whole system in the Metro area. Some specific projects we talked about
were:
