1

1

I

City of New Brighton
February 25, 1982

The City Engineer replied that because of
some contact he has had with various neighbors
he is now recommending that the road be
constructed to a 36 foot width except for
the area in front of the nursing home where
the road will be widened to 44 feet with the
additional widening occuring on the north
side of the road.

Mr. Mike Chies, Administrator of the New Brighton
Care Center nursing home, stated that the owner
recognized they had a problem and that they are
considering various alternatives including moving
the nursing home to another location and converting
the space for office use. Mr. Chies also stated
that he did support the widening of the street
to 44 feet in front of the nursing home. Mr. Chies
stated that they would try to work with the various
neighbors in resolving snow problems. ~1r. Chies
finally stated that they were in favor of the project
and that they felt that the nursing home contributed
a lot to the City.

Mr. Len Juran, 803 8th Avenue NW, presented a petition
speaking in favor of widening the road to 36 feet.

The Mayor with consent of the City Council directed
receipt of the petition.

Mr. Juran stated that the petitioners felt the project
for the 36 foot width was good:

1. That the neighbors were concerned that they not
create a freeway atmosphere with a 44 foot in
width road;
2. That the reduced width would reduce the cost of the
project which was good;
3. That the 36 foot road would conform to 8th Street
west of 8th Avenue;
4. That they were concerned that the assessment be
kept as low as possible;
5. That the neighbors were concerned that a speedway
not be created in the area;
6. That the neighbors were concerned with the truck
traffic in the area and the downtown area; and
7. That they are concerned that a good approach
onto 8th Avenue be constructed.

Mike Chies stated that the nursing home has no objection
to paying its fair share of assessment.

Ray Zellman, 803 7th Avenue NW, asked if the driveways
going to properties would be constructed with aprons.

-14-
