I

I

I

City of New Bricrhton
October 27, 1981

The Mayor requested that staff con~unicate
regarding state participation in the bridge
on Silver Lake Road over 1-694 and regarding
possible reconstruction of the County Road E2
bridge over 1-3SW.

The Mayor with the consent of the Council
directed receipt of a petition regarding
a request for a street light on 17th Avenue
between 17th Street and Long Lake Road.

Hr. Robert Powell, 1738 17th Avenue NW,
stated that there had been a number of
vandalisms including two (2) fire-bombs
directed towards his residence wi thin
this neighborhood and that it was the feeling
of the neigbors that a street light at this
location would be a deterrent to the vandalism
problems.

Mr. Powell stated that he felt the vandalism
problem was a life-threatening situation.

The Mayor reviewed the City policies regarding
street lights and also reviewed the expenses
the City incurs for the street lights currently
existing and the potential for street lights
in the comming years. The Mayor further stated
that he felt increased police surveilance in this
area should be done and that resolution of the
problem would probably be accomplished best through
the police work.

Councilmember Janecek stated that in reviewing
the police reports it appeared that the majority
of vandalism occurred in the rear yards which
may not be helped by installation of a street
light on the street.

Mr. Powell indicated that it was the feeling
of the neighborhood that a light would deter
the vandalisms.

Councilmember Benke indicated that regardless
of what was decided regarding a street light
it was his feeling that some extra-ordinary
police work in the next few weeks was warranted
and that perhaps some additional study by City
staff regarding the light should be done.

Motion by Schmidt, seconded by Janecek to defer
action on the request for a street light until the
November 24, 1981 Council meeting and to direct
staff to continue to investigate and monitor the

-4-

Petition for
Street Light
17th Ave. NW
and 17th St.
Report No. 81-228
