The commission will review the status of the skate board <br />park at their November 4, 2009 meeting. <br />Legislative History: <br />The City received a petition in November 2008 requesting the removal of the skate board ramps <br />from Freedom Park. It stated: "The skateboard ramps at Freedom Park have made the park the <br />playground a site for vandalism, fighting, excessive littering and other illegal activity, resulting <br />in numerous police calls. It has become an unsafe place for children and a detriment to our <br />neighborhood. These New Brighton citizens request the skateboard ramps be removed from <br />Freedom Park." <br />In January 2009, the City received two more petitions. These petitions asked the City to not <br />remove the skate park at Freedom Park. <br />A public hearing was held at the PREC meeting on May 6, 2009. <br />Council reviewed the recommendation from PREC on May 26, 2009 and motioned to accept the <br />Parks and Recreation and Environmental Commission recommendation to keep the skate park <br />open with the provision that the council receives period updates via the Friday memo, and that a <br />staff update occurs at the first regular meeting in August and PREC reviews the status of the <br />skate board park at their November 4, 2009 meeting. <br />The youth have been present at all meetings that have taken place and participated in a park <br />clean-up day and cookout held on June 26`x'. Council received updates in their Friday memo on <br />the following dates: June 5, July 2 and July 24. PREC received updates on the skate board park <br />at their June 3 and August 5 meetings. <br />Financial Impact: <br />None <br />
