Public Safety / Homeland Security Update
Deputy Director Paetznick noted that it was a busy summer for public safety, with police and fire
calls both on the rise.
Commissioner Allen inquired if the recent garage arson was an isolated incident or if there had
been other suspicious fires. Deputy Director Paetznick stated that it appeared to be a single
event.
Council Representative Samuelson inquired about the status of the bank robbery and residential
jewelry burglaries. Deputy Director Paetznick advised that despite the excellent video
surveillance images from the Wells Fargo Bank, no suspects have been identified in the robbery.
Also, no further residential burglaries of a similar nature have occurred since the jewelry thief
story appeared on the television news but the incidents remain an open and active investigation.
Commissioner Allen inquired about the status of Silver Lake Flats. Deputy Director Paetznick
stated that the new CFMH Liaison Officer Hamdorf has been working with the ownership of the
property to produce an acceptable updated mitigation plan, and will be bringing that forth at the
next City Council meeting for approval of a new provisional license at the property.
Commissioner Kerns commented that many of the thefts from motor vehicles appeared to have
been "smash & grabs" and urged continued emphasis on prevention & education of reducing the
opportunity for these crimes to occur in our community.
Referencing the August Monthly Report, Commissioner Schumann inquired about the Predatory
Offender without a permanent address who was charged with failing to register. Deputy Director
Paetznick explained how homeless predatory offenders are required to check-in with their local
law enforcement agency.
Council Liaison
Council Report
Council Representative Samuelson advised that the Ramsey County Library Board approved
moving the Arden Hills Library to the Family Service Center; the Ramsey County
Commissioners will consider this request at their next meeting.
Old Business
Project Lifesaver
Deputy Director Paetznick provided a historical background of the program and the growth in
the number of agencies participating in Project Lifesaver across the state, primarily thanks to the
work of one of our own volunteers, VIPS member Bob Parrott. Ramsey County has been
offering the service for the past year, and given our internal operational requirements and
staffing changes, Deputy Director Paetznick explained that it makes sense for New Brighton to
transfer its limited number of Project Lifesaver clients to the Ramsey County program.
