Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS) <br /> Commissioner Woods reported the following: <br /> a The last blood drive resulted in 32 pints of blood being donated. <br /> a The VIPS doing park patrols will also do home checks for people who notify us they are <br /> gone for an extended period of time. <br /> a Graffiti on the Pike Lake Trail has been painted over. <br /> a VIPS have been helping with Santa Cop. <br /> a New Brighton is going to merge the Project Lifesaver program with Ramsey County's. We <br /> will keep our tracking equipment. <br /> a VIPS do fingerprinting on Thursday mornings. <br /> a The VIPS Christmas party will be next Tuesday. <br /> Public Safety/Homeland Security Update <br /> Director Jacobson noted the Fire Department had a very busy month with fire calls,public <br /> education talks, etc. <br /> The City of New Brighton has been recognized as the second place community for participation <br /> in National Night Out (NNO) by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) for cities of <br /> population 15,000 to 49,999. The 2010 award marks the 11th consecutive year that the City of <br /> New Brighton's annual NNO efforts have been recognized in the top five nationally by NATW, <br /> the sponsor of NNO. Additionally, New Brighton has been in the top 25 nationwide since 1995. <br /> NATW selects the awards recipients based on a community's neighborhood participation, law <br /> enforcement involvement, media&promotional campaign, and special events related to NNO. <br /> The Fire Fighter hiring process continues. We have 9 finalists that will be backgrounded. <br /> The Peace Maker Lunch will be held tomorrow, December 2, with some Commissioners and <br /> Public Safety staff attending. <br /> Council Liaison <br /> Council Report <br /> Council Representative Phillips noted that next Tuesday, December 7th, will be the Truth in <br /> Taxation hearing at 6:30 pm. The 2011 budget will be approved at the December 14th Council <br /> meeting. <br /> City staff has been working on an issue the City has with Clearwire and the cell tower pole they <br /> put up in Freedom Park. The City feels a larger pole was put up than what was presented at the <br /> time of approval. This issue may end up in litigation. <br /> City staff is working on Terms of Agreement with Stuart Companies (developer) to build 124- <br /> 128 high end apartments in the NW Quadrant; it would be a 4-story building with underground <br /> parking. <br />
