Public Safety Commission February 23, 2011 Attending: Commissioner Kerns (Chair), Commissioner Allen, Commissioner Bredenbeck, Commissioner Kroll, Commissioner Schumann, Commissioner Tollefson, Commissioner Woods, Council Representative Samuelson, Dave Matteson and Kevin Miller(Allina), Matt Farmer (Assoc. for Non-Smokers MN Live Smoke Free Housing Program) and Deputy Director Paetznick Absent: Commission Haring Citizens: Long Nguyen Call to Order/Roll Call Commissioner Kerns called the meeting to order at 6:32 pm and roll call was taken. January Meeting Minutes The January meeting minutes were reviewed. Commissioner Woods motioned to accept the minutes; Commissioner Schumann seconded. Motion carried. Public Hearing/Presentations Association for Non-Smokers MN Live Smoke Free Housing Program—Matt Farmer Mr. Matt Farmer gave a brief background on the Association for Non-Smokers MN Live Smoke Free Housing Program. They partner with Ramsey County Health. In 2007, the MN Legislature gave a 2-year grant to improve the health of Minnesotan's by focusing on nutrition, physical activity and tobacco use. The goal of the Live Smoke Free Housing Program is to reduce the number of people who are involuntarily exposed to smoke; not only is this a health issue, this is also a safety issue as there is increased risk of fire injury or death. Commissioner Woods asked if there was a City ordinance regarding this. Deputy Director Paetznick said there was not but there is one voluntary smoke free multi-family facility— National Handicap Housing. Mr. Farmer handed out a packet of information. He noted they help people find smoke free buildings. Commissioner Kroll asked if they did any ZIP code tracking of calls they receiving seeking this type of assistance or complaints. Mr. Farmer said they do and he can get this information for the commission. Commissioner Kerns asked all commissioners to review the packet of information and we will discuss this at next month's meeting.
