D. Public Safety/Homeland Security Update <br /> Director Jacobson reported the hiring of two new police officers: Officer Scott Kingslien was <br /> hired to replace Officer Bitzan who retired and Officer Tom Nerison was hired to replace an <br /> officer who will retire early. <br /> A promotional process has started for the upcoming open Sergeant position. The promotional <br /> process will involve interviews, role playing and written testing. The results of the promotional <br /> process should be received by the end of November/early December. <br /> A resolution of support will be presented at an October Council meeting for the Ramsey County <br /> Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Program. <br /> Eight members of our department will be running the Twin Cities Marathon; this will bring our <br /> department marathon total to 98. One member of our department will be running the Mankato <br /> marathon to bring our total to 99. <br /> Director Jacobson thanked everyone for their participation in National Night Out. Officer <br /> Hamdorf has submitted our final report to Town Watch. <br /> The 65th Anniversary for the Police Department was held and was an enjoyable time. It was nice <br /> to see all the retired and former employees. <br /> Public Safety received congratulations from the IACP Community Policing Award Committee <br /> on being named the winner of the 2011 International Community Policing Award for cities in the <br /> 20,000 to 50,000 category. They added that New Brighton Public Safety is one of a very few <br /> Police agencies in the world to have received this award and are part of an even smaller group <br /> that will be receiving the award for a second time (NBDPS also won this award in 2004). The <br /> award will be presented to the department at the IACP Awards Banquet in October. This is a <br /> very prestigious award and is reflective of our Community, our partners, our volunteers and the <br /> outstanding staff in Public Safety. <br /> Council Liaison <br /> A. Council Report <br /> Council Member Burg reported on the following items: <br /> o After the July 16th rain event, the City worked with Public Safety to get residents in touch <br /> with assistance. <br /> o The View is moving along. <br /> o Northwest Youth& Family Services is having an event on the 29th that you can attend and <br /> sample all kinds of food and drink; it is a fun event. <br /> a The Collier Group, hired to market the New Brighton Exchange, has reported they have 10 <br /> groups interested in the New Brighton Exchange area. <br /> a The Shred Day event was held and was successful. Residents could bring up to 5 banker <br /> boxes of paper for shredding. Code Enforcement Officer Hatch and Officer Hamdorf worked <br /> to coordinate this event. <br />
