N City of
44)NEW
H ON
the city that works for you
Council Worksession
February 28, 2012
Present: Mayor Dave Jacobsen
Councilmember Char Samuelson
Councilmember Mary Burg
Councilmember Paul Jacobsen
Councilmember Gina Bauman
Absent:
Staff in Attendance:
City Manager Dean Lotter
Director of Public Works
Dave Olson, Public Works Supervisor
Scott Boller, Public Works
Craig Schlicting, Engineering
Others in Attendance:
Seth Peterson, Bolten&Menk
Bob Kohler, Kohler Consultants
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 PM.
High Service and Forestdale Tower Discussion:
Director of Public Works Grant Wyffels stated he wanted to keep the Council informed that this summer the
City will have to take the High Service and the Forest Dale water towers out of service to repaint and for minor
structural repairs. The High Service Tower serves the Wexford Heights and Seminary areas and when the tower
is out of service,New Brighton will have to interconnect to the City of Columbia Heights. Columbia Heights
has soft water from the river provided to them by the City of Minneapolis and New Brighton has hard water.
Residents will be notified as this temporary interconnect may require residents shutting down their water
softeners for the duration of the project. The Forestdale Tower works in combination with other towers/wells to
service the remainder of New Brighton. When the Forestdale Tower is out of service no special connections
will be required as flows and service will not be significantly impacted. The total projected cost of these
improvements is $300,00.00. Bob Kohler, with Kohler Consultants gave a brief presentation on the life cycle of
coatings and the scheduled repairs on each of the towers. He noted that the communication equipment on the
towers would need to be powered down or moved if they could not be powered down.
Director Wyffels stated that the costs for these projects are based on rate studies and they are not the actual
project numbers. The City will solicit bids for this project.
Seth Peterson, with Bolten& Menk and Bob Kohler, with Kohler gave details of the project to Council.
Director Wyffels provided Council information regarding the lettering and painting options. The Council
elected to utilize the current City logo, however they chose to use an adjusted scale for the High Service Tower
1
