Agenda Section: VT T T-4
CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON
Report Number: 9 7-18 3
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
• Report Date: August 12, 1997
ITEM DESCRIPTION: PROCESS FOR CONSIDERING NAME CHANGE TO OLD HIGHWAY 8
DEPT. HEAD'S APPROVAL:
MANAGER'S REVIEW/RECOMMENDATION:
No comments to supplement this report Comments attached
EXPLANATION:
The Council recently requested staff to identify the specific process that could be followed relating to the
consideration of a name change for Old Highway 8. The following is intended to suggest such a process. Based on
information collected to-date, several significant points should be identified that will impact on any process
established for considering a name change.
1. Given the configuration of Old Highway 8, any name change would likely involve the communities of
Roseville, St. Anthony, MoundsView, and New Brighton. Therefore, multi jurisdictional involvement and
approvals would be necessary.
The post office had indicated significant problems currently with the address sequencing along Old Highway
8. As a result, regardless of actions taken pertaining to the actual name of the street, attention should be given
to the re-alignment of property addresses along the street.
3. The discussion relating to a potential change of the street name has started to generate additional public
discussion, both pro and con relating to the name change. As a result, it will be very important to receive
additional public input regarding this issue prior to making any formal conclusions.
A recent meeting with representatives of the post office, Chamber of Commerce, and a couple of local businesses
concluded that the following process would make sense as it relates to considering a name change for Old Highway 8:
1. The initial step is currently underway and would involve the collection of specific information regarding the
(continued on page 2)
RECOMMENDATION:
MOTION TO APPROVE THE SUGGESTED PROCESS FOR CONSIDERING A NAME CHANGE OF OLD
HIGHWAY 8 AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
:
iMa ew S.
