Name Change Old Highway 8
August 12, 1997
Page 2
411 addressing of parcels along the entire stretch of Old Highway 8. The postoffice is currently in the process of
collecting this information. This will help to identify specific problem areas regarding the address sequencing
and where multiple addresses may be currently used. Contacting other municipalities to identify this issue and
gain their participation would also need to be done during this initial step.
2. The Chamber of Commerce has indicated their willingness to participate as a leader in this overall project as it
will significantly involve the New Brighton business community. Once all of the pertinent background
information has been received, it would be recommended that a survey be administered for the impacted
properties and that the Chamber/City host a public information meeting be held to discuss the need for correcting
address sequencing and the possibility of changing the name of Old Highway 8.
3. Following this meeting, and getting the formal input from the New Brighton area Chamber of Commerce, the
City Council should consider whether or not to proceed with a formal name change. If the Council concludes that
a name change should not occur, a plan would still need to be developed relating to the resequencing of addresses
to assist with postal delivery and public safety needs. if the Council concludes that it should proceed with the
name change, it would be recommended that a survey be given to all properties along this street requesting
suggested street names. The final decision regarding the ultimate street name and should be a collaborative effort
with Chamber representation and the other communities involved. It will also be important to ensure that any
name change meets with the approval of the postoffice so that repetitive names are avoided in their postal
delivery area.
lin a timing perspective, I would think we could get through the process by the end of this year or early next year.
owever, with any name or address change, a significant amount of lead time will be required to allow for making
changes. As a result, an actual implementation time frame would likely be in 1999. There will be numerous transitional
issues that will need to be resolved as part of the overall process.
•
I:1SHAREDICOUNCIL\REPORTS\1997\HWY8-NAM.CHG
