Disabled residents of the nearby
senior assisted care facility use the trail quite frequently and require a smooth surface for their
wheelchairs. Some stop-gap steps can be taken for such access over the short run but entire
replacement of the trail surface would be needed in the not-so-distant future. Resting benches
and additional landscaping would also be in any reconstruction plans.
The National Recreational Trail Funding Act has made grant dollars available for such work
through the State DNR. The Application process is competitive and would require a $5,000 hard
match on the part of the City. This could perhaps appear as an item in the 1998 budget.
Another grant application is directed towards an eventual trail hook-up between the Family
Service Center and the intersection of 10th St. N. W. and 5th Ave. N. W.. The most likely plan
would involve some kind of bridge over the creek in addition to the asphalt trail. We would be
asking for$5,000 on this application also. Again, we would have to provide a hard match for
these funds.
For now, all that is needed is a resolution authorizing the application process for these two
grants. The deadline for both is March 31, 1997.
