Agenda Section: VI-2
CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON gri
Report Number: - -053
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
Report Date: March 11, 1997
411
ITEM DESCRIPTION QUOTES FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS
ON CITY WELL 5& 8 PUMPS
DEPT. HEAD'S APPROVAL: r•
L
MANAGER'S REVIEW/RECOMMENDATION:
/,
No comments to supplement this report jP p Comments attached
EXPLANATION/SUMMARY (attach supplemental sheets as necessary)
The purpose of this item is to obtain Council authorization to proceed with routine maintenance and repair work on well pumps in City
Wells 5 and 8.The majority of the work will be routine maintenance consisting of pulling the well pumps, inspecting them, replacing
worn and corroded parts and reinstalling them. Well 5,which is located at 3001 -5th Street NW,has last been pulled for maintenance
in November of 1991. It has produced 670 million gallons of water since November of 1991.Well 5 is part of the ground water
remediation system and the maintenance and repair cost will be paid from the Army 20 year operation and maintenance fund.
Well 8, located at 600 Silver Lake Road,is one of the City deep aquifer wells and was last pulled for maintenance in 1991. It is used
primarily to meet peak water demand periods and therefore does not get a lot of usage. It has only produced about 145 million gallons
of water and needs to be pulled for maintenance because of the long period of time it has been in service. Whereas we expect to see
wear on the well 5 pump due to the high usage, corrosion may be more of a problem with the pump in well 8.The repair cost for well 8
•Ould be paid from the City water fund. The following quotations have been received for the maintenance work:
Well 5 Pump Maintenance Well 8 Pump Maintenance
Alberg Water Service $ 8,728.00 $10,858.00
Bergerson Caswell $10,016.00 $14,431.00
Keys Well Drilling $10,872.00 $13,177.00
E.H.Renner and Sons $13,616.00 $17,808.00
The quotations are based on estimated work and parts that may be required. The actual cost per well typically runs in the neighborhood
of about$25,000, if major parts need to be replaced or if the wells need to be cleaned of sand. We recommend that Council authorize
the expenditure of up to$25,000 per well, and if the final cost exceeds$25,000 we will report back at a later date for further
authorization. All of the above contractors have preformed satisfactorily on past City work and we recommend that this work be
awarded to Alberg Water Service who has submitted the low quote for both well pumps
RECOMMENDATION
To APPROVE THE QUOTATIONS FROM ALBERG WATER SERVICES FOR THE MAINTENANCE WORK ON THE WELL
PUMPS 5 AND 8 AND AUTHORIZE THE EXPENDITURE OF UP TO$25,000 PER WELL FOR THE MAINTENANCE
WORK.
111/
Brian E.
