To put this in perspective, I called the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
today and spoke to Mr. Brian Tiemerson. He is a specialist in noise
pollution. In asking for various examples of noise levels, he stated that no
figure is absolute. In reading a reference from a book on acoustics, he
gave me the following examples of different decibel levels:
Subject dba
Rock concert 120
Pneumatic drill 110
Wood joiner 100
Chain saw 90
Truck traffic 80
Business office 70
Conversation 60
Library 50
Bedroom 40
Secluded woods 30
Whisper 20
As you can observe, 66 dba at the curb line is nothing out of the ordinary.
A recent article in the "Star Tribune" on January 16, 1999, the noise
levels for a recent Viking game at the Metrodome was discussed. A chart
of noise levels showed the following:
Subject dba
Ear damage 150
Jet at 100 feet 140
Pain Threshold 130
Metrodome -
1987 World Series 120
Rivet gun 110
Jackhammer 100
Heavy traffic 90
Vacuum cleaner 80
Loud conversation 50
Normal conversation 30
Light whisper 10
Hearing threshold 0
Again, reviewing the figures shows that 66 dba does not appear to be
severe.
