Shoreview and Arden Hills. When he was asked if there were another place in
New Brighton that would be able to have a lacrosse field, he answered that
Driftwood would probably be the only viable spot. Hidden Oaks would be too
small. To have a full size lacrosse field, it needs to be 120 yards in length by 60
yards in width, add sidelines and that is another 5 yards. Vermont would not have
enough space and because of the traffic, you would have to increase the size of
the fences. Most of the parks just don't have the open space you need to have a
full size field. At Driftwood you could have soccer and lacrosse, but it would tax
the field and there may be more maintenance issues. It is the biggest open space
we have now, so that would probably be easiest.
Tom Trevorrow, 1694 23rd Ave NW
The area east of Old Hwy 8 along the road is a grassy area that looks pretty
decent there. Could that area be used as a temporary soccer field for practice?
Would like to make the park very welcoming. Benches help to make it
welcoming.
Keith J. Flakne, 3040 13th Terr. NW.
He is part of the Irondale Baseball league. New Brighton needs baseball
diamonds badly. They have 180 kids 3-8th grade. New Brighton has zero fields
that they can play on. They play games in Mounds View, and sometimes use the
school district fields for practice which are terrible. A field in the new park or
anywhere in New Brighton is needed. We are scrambling for fields this spring. If
we could get a field for kids, it would be used a lot. The Groveland fields in
Mounds View are the size we need. The baseline starts at 60 feet and then in the
U15 they start using 75 foot baselines. The pitchers rubber is set at 60 feet.
Judi Mikolai (representing Rice Creek Boat Club), 2080 Long Lake Road. She
was not requesting any land use in North Park, but had a request for use of some
land close to the railroad tracks near the lake. Rice Creek Boat Club is a canoe
and kayak racing club. Home base is Long Lake. They are on Long Lake quite
regularly during the summer. The kids are learning to do marathons or sprints in
canoes and kayaks. Tandem kayaks and canoes and solo kayaks and canoes
are used. The goal is to introduce kids to canoe paddling, promote physical
fitness and offer an alternative teen sport to sports like baseball and lacrosse.
The club is in its 7th year. The club is growing steadily. The club primarily runs
from May to August. A fair amount of equipment (the boats) is needed. We are
asking to place a 40 foot storage container on the South Park space to store the
boats. We are limiting the number of kids that can participate because we have
to trailer our boats to the lake each time we want to use them. We normally work
with 13-18 year olds. We've expanded and run classes through New Brighton
Parks and Recreation and offer classes to kids in the 10-13 year old age group.
Separate camps are held for each canoeing and kayaking. Two different kinds of
boats are used so they have to be trailered back and forth to accommodate the
two different camps. The 40 foot container is very safe. They cannot be tipped
over or damaged too much. She stated that another option would be to put the
container down by the boat launch area. The Club made a request for that last
summer with Ramsey County but the request was denied. Liability issues were
considered. The Rice Creek Boat Club does have insurance. The Club had
talked about chaining the boats to trees but felt they were susceptible to possible
2
