graffiti or theft and therefore thought the 40 foot container was the best option.
We have not talked with Ramsey County regarding any other location options for
the storage container. Another option we are considering is having a paddling
center where canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards could be rented. Maybe
an agreement could be made where we could have storage there for our boats
and then the more public facility rental for the general public. At Lake Elmo and
Elm Creek we found that when these facilities are built, people came out of the
woodwork. When the new facilities were built, the use increased; the parking lot
is always full. This could possibly happen at Long Lake. The nearest rental
facility is on Silver Lake. Do not believe that would stop people from coming to
Long Lake. Long Lake is bigger. It takes about an hour and 15 minutes to go
around. It is also sheltered from the wind. Some of the kayaks are very tippy; so
wind is a factor. The north and south part of the lake are natural paths. The
beach is there. Perhaps a rental facility could be right at the beach. Already have
a parking lot. People could canoe, kayak, paddleboat or swim and enjoy the
picnic area. There was an inquiry about having adult paddle lessons. Rice Creek
Boat Club is starting a "Friends of Rice Creek Boat Club" paddling interest group.
On Saturdays at 9am there will be a "bring- your-own-boat" to the launch.
Chair Frischman stated that because this item is not really part of the North Park,
it will probably need to be discussed as a separate item. The Parks, Recreation
and Environmental Commission would need to make a recommendation to the
City Council.
Judi Mikolai stated that it is a home grown club for youth paddling and racing. We
are not national. We are the only club between here and Winnipeg and
Oklahoma City for youth paddling and racing. We started paddling 7 years ago.
Our kids are highly competitive when they are paddling. It's not all about winning
but it is impressive what the club and coaches have done. We work with some of
the top marathon canoeists in Minnesota and they want the sport to continue. We
got started because we are a cross training club for cross-country skiers. The
kids in our club are being very successful at this. We have had really good
results from training on Long Lake and we would like to continue training there. It
is something we can boast of from our hometown. People living on the lake are
very amazed that we have those kind of results. In the camps we take about 12
youth. It is a week-long camp. The regular program meets May-August. We have
a core of about 30 paddlers. Last summer for the New Brighton Parks and
Recreation Ed-ventures program, the older club members helped teach the Ed-
venture kids how to steer. Within one week, every kid was able to steer the boat.
They had really good strokes because they had that one-on-one with the older
kids.
Commissioner Fields stated that last month we had talked about 325 ft. for the
softball field. He noticed it was now 300 ft.
Director Breuer commented that we went back the Minnesota Recreation and
Parks Association and were told that we should be looking at 300 ft.
Commissioner Parker inquired if the field would be lighted.
3
