Director Breuer stated that it would be up to this commission to discuss.
Commissioner Fields asked if we chose to have two ball fields in the North Park,
would we eliminate two fields at Hansen Park? Would that space at Hansen Park
be used for something else?
Recreation Supervisor Pat Tuma stated we have had trouble with Hansen 3 and
4 for quite a few years. They will never be good areas to have nice ball fields.
Director Breuer stated that we were told that in order to fix the soil issues at
Hansen, we would need to go down 18 feet and remove the peat and put in new
soil.
Commissioner Fields said there was one diagram that showed a ball diamond
and a soccer field together. That seems to be the one that would take care of a
couple of the needs requested tonight. Although he was not sure the 300 ft field
would take care of the baseball needs.
Keith Flakne, representing IBL, commented that we have a need for 3rd grade on
up.
Commissioner Kunesh-Podein inquired if the Hansen fields would be eliminated
if the two fields were put at North Park.
Recreation Supervisor Pat Tuma commented that we would probably use
Hansen Park for something else.
Commissioner Kunesh-Podein asked what kind of things we could put there.
Director Breuer said ideas would be: leave it as open space, have a community
garden, expand the disc golf course.
Recreation Supervisor Pat Tuma stated it would reduce the number of ball fields
that we have right now. There are some leagues that cannot play there because
of the higher caliber of play. The field use generally has two games per night.
With a lighted field you can put 4 games per night on a field. Usually they are
done by 10:30 p.m. That is how we do it at Freedom Park. Some leagues are
playing double headers; currently it is the Monday and Friday night leagues. A
lighted field at North Park would take care of the needs that we have. The
parking for the proposed field at North Park may better serve the safety of
players and residents. The parking areas for Hansen #3 and #4 have narrow
roads, it is hard to see and the neighborhood has children present. Also there are
probably more parking spaces in the North Park proposed parking lot.
Director Breuer stated there are 104 spots in the parking lot on the North Park
proposal. Approximately 96 parking spaces would be needed to accommodate
ball players.
Recreation Supervisor Pat Tuma stated as far as soccer goes, we would want to
keep the fields we have. The greatest need is for a lighted, full size soccer and/or
4
